Approximate range: $45000-65000 per year, plus benefits.
Job type: Full-time, one-year employment contract with possibility of extension and performance-based increase.

Location: Victoria or Lower Mainland, BC (ideally, the candidate will be based out of Victoria)
Watershed Watch Salmon Society is non-profit organization that promotes wild salmon and watershed conservation throughout British Columbia. Our work focuses on many issues affecting salmon, including habitat protection, sustainability in salmon fisheries, reforming BC’s salmon aquaculture industry, ensuring adequate water flows for fish, and the implementation of the federal government’s Wild Salmon Policy. We are a federally registered charity with a strong legacy as a science-based watchdog organization, and we are working to increase our engagement with the general public in order to better protect wild salmon and watersheds in BC.
The Communications Manager will support and guide our small team in all aspects of public communications, to multiple audiences, and through multiple platforms.
We are looking for someone who:
- Is a skilled communicator, with the knowledge, experience, and dedication to elevate public understanding of the issues we work on, and also elevate Watershed Watch’s public profile and support base;
- Has a strong conservation ethic and understands the cultural, social, and ecological importance of wild salmon and fresh water to British Columbians;
- Can relate to, comfortably communicate with, and engage the wide array of people who make up BC’s wild salmon constituency;
- Has a basic knowledge of salmon conservation and management issues and their socio-political context;
- Is a proficient writer and storyteller with experience in key formats and forums (print, web, traditional media, social media, etc.);
- Is a strategic, rational thinker and creative problem-solver who seeks out evidence when forming opinions and making decisions;
- Is an adept user of social media (particularly Facebook and Twitter);
- Can interact effectively with journalists (including writing, editing, and distributing media releases);
- Can work collaboratively to plan and execute projects (set and achieve realistic goals, manage multiple concurrent projects through prioritization and scheduling, and adapt to changing circumstances);
- Can manage multimedia content and work with content providers (designers, filmmakers, photographers, writers) to produce hard-hitting material;
- Is not afraid to give or receive constructive criticism;
- Can occasionally work on evenings or weekends, when needed;
- Lives in the Victoria area and will work in our Victoria office with the Executive Director (we will also consider candidates based in the Lower Mainland and elsewhere);
- Knows, or can quickly learn, how to use the following computer tools: Google Drive and Docs, WordPress, Mailchimp, Salesforce;
- Has formal training and/or experience in communications or a related field.
- Work with other staff—and occasionally colleagues from other organizations—to develop, refine, and execute campaign-specific strategies, ensuring that communications are well aligned with strategies.
- Plan communications for specific campaigns and the organization as a whole, in collaboration with staff and contractors.
- Manage the development and delivery of content (social media posts, emails to our followers, media releases, short videos, op-eds, talking points, etc.), frequently “taking the pen”.
- Actively manage our social media accounts.
- Ensure that our communications increase our public profile and list of followers and supporters.
- Identify and manage public messaging opportunities.
- Monitor, analyze, and report to staff on communications-related metrics and data, working with staff to continually improve the reach and impact of our communications.
- Ensure that the content and tone of all messaging are effective, appropriate, and aligned with our strategies, organizational culture, and positions on key issues, and are also legally compliant (e.g. with Revenue Canada’s regulations for registered charities).
- Curate our weekly Salmon News distribution to our list.
- Monitor social and traditional media and report coverage of Watershed Watch and other relevant items to staff.
- Oversee the development and distribution of marketing and engagement materials such as printed handouts, public display materials, and branded merchandise.
- Help other staff and volunteers to ensure that we get results (i.e., new sign-ups) at public outreach events.
- Identify capacity shortfalls in our ability to implement our communications plans, and work with staff to find solutions.
- Occasionally assist with the development of grant proposals and reports.
- Manage your diverse and demanding workload through prioritization, scheduling, and frequent consultation with the Executive Director.
- Track and report your time (by project and activity) on a daily basis.
