Last week our Science and Campaign Advisor Stan Proboszcz joined the Sea to Sky Fisheries Roundtable to meet with their new MP, Pam Goldsmith-Jones. The Roundtable is continuing its tradition of engaging with local politicians on important water and salmon issues. It was a great opportunity to speak to Ms. Goldsmith-Jones and her team about some of the new government’s promises, including the implementation of the Cohen Inquiry recommendations. The group is looking for an update from government on the process, timelines, and progress.
The Fisheries Act was also raised, along with the Navigable Waters Act and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, as the government has committed to repairing these three key pieces of legislation. The Roundtable also asked for an update on this process.
Finally, we discussed the management of the Howe Sound commercial fishery, in the wake of problems with that fishery in 2015. Members are worried about local salmon stocks and all the species that depend on them, including Brackendale eagles.
Pam Goldsmith-Jones was eager to liase with the Roundtable and help get answers to all their questions. A very positive start to the new year!
