PRESS RELEASE: Public forum to share information on proposed hazardous waste treatment facility

Chilliwack — On Saturday January 18th, 2014 from 2-4pm community partners are hosting a public forum to discuss the proposed location of a hazardous waste treatment facility on the flood plain of the Fraser River in Chilliwack. This is in response to the recent rezoning decision made by Mayor Gaetz and Council on December 3rd, 2013. Council voted unanimously to rezone existing industrial land for special use, that being a hazardous waste recycling facility. The forum will take place at the Evergreen Hall, 9291 Corbould Street, Chilliwack.
The forum will allow concerned residents of Chilliwack and the larger Fraser River watershed to learn facts about the proposal, concerns and next steps to ensure a safe environment for all.
The partners include local First Nations, environmental organizations and the recreational fisher community.
International conservationist and founder of BC Rivers Day, Mark Angelo will be the key note speaker at the forum. Also attending is Grand Chief Clarence Pennier, Sto:Lo Tribal Council, to provide the perspective of local First Nations. After the short presentations, the main focus of the public forum is to allow attendees to comment, ask questions, or discuss next steps.
We invite media to attend the forum to get a better understanding of the issues and witness citizens’ concerns about the current location as well as Councils’ handling of the public feedback.
