Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project Community Open House

Watershed Watch Salmon Society in conjunction with Save Our Rivers and the Wilderness Committee is hosting a Community Open House regarding the Bute Inlet Hydroelectric project Tuesday February 10 at 7:00pm at the UBC Robson Square Campus.

This proposed project would be bigger than Site C and would require the diversion of 17 rivers, as well as construction of 440 kilometers of transmission line, and hundreds of kilometers of new roads with new stream crossings. This project has the potential to irreversibly affect this wilderness and its grizzlies, mountain goats, marbled murrelets and resident fish.  Watershed Watch believes an urgent response is required to preserve this remote and stunning area.

The public comment period for the massive Bute Inlet Hydroelectric Project is open until February 18th, and it is important to be informed and tell the government what you think.  The government has held open houses in Sechelt, Powell River and Campbell River, but has refused to hold them in Vancouver and Victoria, saying that people in these cities are not directly affected. We’re all affected when such massive, ill-advised projects are built without our input or consent.

Watershed Watch and its allies are all cooperating to host this event in the absence of a proper government process, because we think that a project of this size is of interest to the whole province. To make the situation even more alarming, the Bute project is simply the largest among many private hydropower projects currently proposed for the south coast area. The government needs to hear that we care about these valleys.
